Dr. Lisa Bonang has been awarded the Leadership Excellence Award – Physician Leader, which recognizes one outstanding Nova Scotia Health physician leader. This award is presented to a physician who consistently models the behaviours and values of a Nova Scotia Health leader and applies the LEADS leadership philosophy. Dr. Bonang embodies professionalism, delivering her role in alignment with Nova Scotia Health’s vision, mission and values.
As a long-time resident and physician on the Eastern Shore, Dr. Bonang understands the needs of both healthcare professionals and the community. In her leadership roles, she collaborates with physicians, community members and health leaders to improve healthcare services in the area. As Family Practice Network Lead, she focuses on strengthening family practices, supporting patient access, and helping physicians balance family medicine with other responsibilities. She collaborates with the Department of Family Practice to coordinate and manage physician activities across the network.
Dr. Bonang exemplifies what it means to be a physician leader at Nova Scotia Health through her advocacy for healthcare improvements, collaboration and mentorship.
Q&A with Dr. Lisa Bonang:
Tell us a bit about yourself; what you do, where you're located, and your favorite part of it.
Dr. Bonang is a Family Physician at the Musquodoboit Harbour Family Practice and serves as the Site and Primary Care Lead for the Tri-Facilities (Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, and Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital).
"My favorite part of what I do is interacting with amazing people and shaping not only the health of the population but also the health of the professionals caring for them," said Dr. Bonang.
How do you feel your work contributes to the health and wellbeing of Nova Scotians? Why is it important?
"As a family physician, I navigate healthcare and serve as the 'safety net.' What we do forms the foundation of healthcare. In my leadership role, I provide a medical and clinical perspective on policies, procedures and actions to ensure they work best for our communities and avoid unintended consequences," explained Dr. Bonang.
What does it mean to you to receive the Leadership Excellence Award – Physician Leader?
"It validates the great work happening in our communities and at our sites. I work with an amazing team of professionals who strive every day to care for our communities. This award celebrates all of us!" said Dr. Bonang.
As this year’s recipient, how do you hope to inspire others who are working to make a difference in the lives of Nova Scotians each day?
"I hope this inspires others to see that change is possible! Your hard work truly makes a difference. It shows that your expertise and opinions matter. Don’t lose faith—continue to advocate for yourselves and your communities. Together, we DO make a difference," said Dr. Bonang.
