When patients arrive at Dartmouth General Hospital, many will meet Dr. Emad Abed, a hospitalist physician whose dedication to patient-centred care is shaped by a rich and diverse medical background.

Originally from Palestine, Emad earned bachelor’s of medicine and surgery (MBBS) from Sanaa University in Yemen before completing the Palestinian Board in Internal Medicine. He then earned a master degree in clinical psychiatry through an online program with the University of South Wales. Over the past 15 years, he has worked in busy emergency departments, specialized mental-health centres and medical education. He’s held roles as an internal medicine specialist, psychiatrist and educator. His focus has consistently been on caring for patients with complex medical and mental health needs. About a year ago, Emad relocated to Nova Scotia and joined Dartmouth General Hospital as a hospitalist.

“I chose to move to Nova Scotia for the welcoming and friendly community. I was also drawn to its natural beauty, mild climate, and balanced lifestyle, which make it a great place to live and raise children. Living and working here gives me the chance to contribute to the health system while building a life in a place that truly feels like home,” Emad said.

Nova Scotia Health has successfully filled multiple hospitalist vacancies within Central Zone, welcoming nine new physicians to the team for 2024-25. This recruitment effort strengthens our ability to deliver timely, patient-centered care, ensuring individuals admitted to hospital receive the dedicated attention they need throughout their stay. Hospitalists play a crucial role in co-ordinating treatment, managing patient care during hospital stays, and collaborating closely with specialists and nursing teams.

From a young age, Emad felt compelled to pursue a path where he could make a tangible difference in people’s lives. His career navigated toward hospital medicine because of his love for variety, problem-solving and collaboration. “As a hospitalist, I have the opportunity to provide continuity of care for acutely ill patients, coordinate complex treatment plans and work closely with multidisciplinary teams,” Emad explains.

Emad describes hospitalists as the physicians who oversee a patient’s hospital stay, from admission to discharge. They act as the central point of coordination, ensuring smooth communication among specialists, nurses and allied health professionals.

A typical day for Emad begins with reviewing charts, test results and overnight updates before making rounds to see each patient. Throughout the day, he admits new patients, collaborates with specialists, responds to urgent consultations and ensures discharge plans are in place. “It’s dynamic and unpredictable,” he shares.

Like many hospitalists, Emad faces the challenge of balancing high patient volumes with the need for individualized care. Managing patients with multiple conditions requires not only medical expertise but also empathy and strong communication, especially when supporting families during critical moments. Despite these challenges, he finds deep fulfillment in his role. “For me, the most rewarding part is being there for patients during their most vulnerable times and seeing them recover enough to go home,” he says.

Emad emphasizes that hospital care depends on the collaboration of the team. Physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists and social workers all play an essential role. “When you work seamlessly as a team, patients receive better, more holistic care,” he explains. “Teamwork not only improves outcomes but also makes the work environment more positive and supportive.”

For physicians considering a career in hospital medicine, Emad offers thoughtful advice: “Be adaptable, stay curious and never underestimate the value of clear communication. Hospital medicine is fast-paced and unpredictable, but it’s also deeply rewarding. Building strong relationships with colleagues and maintaining empathy for patients will carry you far.”
