About the Opportunity

Valley Regional Hospital (VRH) is seeking a general otolaryngologist to join the existing team of two for a 0.83 full-time equivalency (FTE). Operating room time is divided among the three otolaryngologists based on wait list and urgency. Typically, 4-5 days per month per surgeon. These days are distributed among sites in the Western Zone (Kentville, Yarmouth and Bridgewater) and a community hospital in Central Zone (Windsor). A monthly operating rota entails 1-2 days at Valley Regional Hospital and 2-4 days at other sites. Ambulatory care time for hospital-based minor procedures is also available at Valley Regional Hospital as well as surrounding community hospitals and health centres. Opportunities to do travelling clinics in more rural areas are also available. Nova Scotia Health Travel Policy is applicable.

Compensation is fee for service. In addition, on-call stipends and other incentives are available through the Master Agreement between the Province of Nova Scotia and Doctors Nova Scotia.

Physicians also have an opportunity to be a preceptor for medical students and residents as well as to affiliate with Dalhousie University as an Assistant Professor. These opportunities are remunerated according to the Master Agreement.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity join an established office in Kentville with one of the otolaryngologists. Overhead expenses would be shared equitably. Site visit and relocation allowance programs may be available to eligible candidates. 

 

About Valley Regional Hospital

VRH is a 137-bed facility that provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and satellite care to a catchment area of approximately 90,000 residents. It serves the people of Kings and Annapolis Counties, and provides specialty services as a referral centre for the Annapolis Valley and other areas of Western Nova Scotia.

 

Job Description

  • full scope of practice as an otolaryngologist with a subspecialty interest in Otology providing care to the patients within the Western Zone
  • full scope includes care for common pediatric otolaryngology complaints including the medical and surgical management of these problems and call coverage for pediatric medical and surgical emergencies
  • participating in call and able to respond to urgent matters within 20 minutes of being called
  • provide support to Valley Regional Hospital but also to others in the Western Zone if required, which may include day-time coverage and occasional overnight/weekend coverage
  • collaborate with primary care physicians, specialists and other health professionals on complete patient issues
  • responsible to the Zone Department Head for Surgery for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice and will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Nova Scotia Health Authority
