Job Description

Join an established collaborative family practice in Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton, working alongside 4 physicians, 2 NP, nurses, social workers, and allied health professionals to provide primary care to the community. Port Hawkesbury Health Centre offers attractive, newly renovated spaces, experienced and supportive administrative professionals, and a turnkey practice, with opportunities for on-site minor procedures, hospital work and ED just 15min away, teaching opportunities with Medical Learners, women's health, and long-term care support.

The clinic hosts a Pre-Natal Outreach Clinic each month and has a continuing care coordinator on-site. The patient demographics range broadly as this is the service hub for the region, with many schools, amenities, industry, and long-term care facilities.

Options to take on existing patient panel as well as bring in patients from the registry. 

Flexible full or part-time opportunities in the clinic, with options to support services at the nearby 20-bed acute care hospital. 

Specialist consultants are happy to support the Family Medicine physicians. The Antigonish Memorial Regional Hospital is only 45 min away, Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the Cancer Care Centre less than 2hrs away, and the tertiary care and pediatric facility less than 3hrs away. 

This is an ideal opportunity for a physician seeking work/life balance, supportive colleagues, on-site interdisciplinary services, and practice options. 

Responsibilities

  • provide comprehensive, full-scope primary health care to practice patients of all ages and stages of health and illness
  • maintain timely and accurate patient records using a provincially approved electronic medical record (EMR)
  • participate in quality improvement, practice evaluation, and other activities that support the delivery of safe, effective, patient-centered care
  • attend regular physician and team meetings
  • comply with the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, policies, and professional standards of Nova Scotia Health
  • partake in continuing medical education (CME) and professional development opportunities 
  • participate in teaching of medical learners

Expected Hours

  • Full-time Equivalency or Part-Time
  • weekly hours flexible
  • call schedule only applicable for hospital or LTC work
  • 46/52 weeks per year for full-time 

Remuneration

  • Longitudinal Family Medicine (LFM) contract approximately $390.000CAD per year for full-time
  • family physicians in Nova Scotia are compensated based on the LFM payment model or Fee for Service (FFS)
  • hospital or ED work remunerated via daily and hourly rate respectively

Facility Information

PHHC is a modern clinic that opened in 2020 and expanded to include additional exam rooms in 2023. It has young and vibrant administrative staff and supportive and knowledgeable clinical coworkers. Port Hawkesbury is on the Southwestern end of Cape Breton Island, on the north shore of the Strait of Canso. A vibrant town with a robust economy and rich maritime character, Port Hawkesbury is known for its strategic location and bustling port, serving as a gateway to Cape Breton Island and a key hub for transportation and commerce.
