Job Description
Join an established collaborative family practice in Neils Harbour, working alongside physicians, NPs, and other allied health to provide primary care to the community. Highlands Medical Clinic offers supportive practice in a conveniently located clinic with opportunities for hospital work, emergency, procedures, and teaching residents or medical learners.
Located along the famous Cabot Trail within Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neils Harbour, Highlands Medical Clinic offers an integrated, collaborative approach to healthcare. The 10-bed short-term care facility serves approximately 2,800 residents across 13 coastal communities, from Cape Smokey to Meat Cove. The facility also houses Public Health, Continuing Care, social work, Addiction Services, and Palliative Care, supporting a comprehensive, team-based approach to community healthcare in one of Cape Breton’s most scenic regions.
Responsibilities
- provide comprehensive, full-scope primary health care to practice patients of all ages and stages of health and illness
- maintain timely and accurate patient records using a provincially approved electronic medical record (EMR)
- participate in quality improvement, practice evaluation, and other activities that support the delivery of safe, effective, patient-centered care
- attend regular physician and team meetings
- comply with the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, policies, and professional standards of Nova Scotia Health
- partake in continuing medical education (CME) and professional development opportunities
- participate in teaching of medical learners
Expected Hours
- Full-time Equivalency or Part-time available
- 46/52 weeks per year for full-time, office-based providers
Remuneration
- Longitudinal Family Medicine (LFM) contract approximately$375,000 to $400,000 CAD
- Family Physicians in Nova Scotia are compensated based on the LFM payment model or Fee for Service (FFS)

Qualifications
- All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
- All family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)

Facility Information
Buchanan Memorial Community Health Centre (BMCHC) is a short-term care facility located in Neil’s Harbour. It serves the communities of Neil’s Harbour, Dingwall, Bay St. Lawrence, Meat Cove, Ingonish and surrounding areas. BMCHC opened officially in 1999 after a storied history. It was designed with the input from all disciplines to provide an integrated approach to service care and delivery.
BMCHC is a 10-bed inpatient unit that provides inpatient and outpatient care and clinic-based programs. It also has a community service wing that houses offices for Public Health, Home Care Nova Scotia, social work, addiction services, and a palliative care coordinator.
