Company Description

The community of Canso has an opportunity for family physicians to join their team. There is opportunity to engage in research and/or teaching positions with Dalhousie University, if that is of interest. The local community hospital, Eastern Memorial Hospital, serves the population in the eastern portion of Guysborough County.  The nearest regional hospital, St. Martha's Regional Hospital, is approximately 90minutes from Canso. The family practice office is staffed and managed by NSH.

Job Description

Services: 

  • Alternative Level of Care unit (12 beds)
  • cardiac respiratory services
  • diagnostic imaging (X-ray)
  • emergency medicine
  • family medicine
  • maternal and child services
  • medical unit (six beds)
  • mental health and addiction services day program
  • midwife clinic
  • occupational therapy
  • palliative care consultation service
  • physiotherapy
  • restorative care unit (12 beds)

Responsibilities

  • duties include full scope of practice as a family physician providing care to patients within the eastern zone and participating in call
  • the physician will be responsible to the zone department head of family practice for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice.  They will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Examine patients and take their histories, order diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures;

  • Advise patients on health care, health promotion, and disease prevention
  • Consultation and referral to other medical practitioners
  • Act as a patient’s advocate
  • Prescribe and administer medications and treatments, inoculations and vaccinations
  • Report births, deaths, contagious and other diseases as per Nova Scotia Public Health requirements

Expected Hours

  • full-time
  • part-time
  • week-on/week off scheduling with family practice, inpatient, and emergency room coverage expected
  • on-call for each week-on
