Company Description

Nova Scotia Health is seeking expressions of interest for the role of Department Head for Internal Medicine in the Northern Zone.  Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director, the Department Head is responsible for the operations of the Internal Medicine Medical staff and to ensure that department members are compliant with the Bylaws and Rules and regulations of the NSHA. The role provides leadership to the Internal Medicine site specialty leads as well as performance management and physician resource planning for members of the department.

The Zone Department Head for Internal Medicine:

  • Represents more than 15 physicians working in Truro, Amherst, and New Glasgow. 
  • Oversees the provision of internal medicine services across the Northern Zone

The successful applicant may work at any site in the zone.

Job Description

The Zone Department Head for Internal Medicine agrees to the following service deliverables: 

  1. Ensure that department members are compliant with the Bylaws and Rules and regulations of the NSHA;
  2. Hold regular department meetings and provide the Zone Medical Executive Director with meeting minutes;
  3. Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director;
  4. Works with Specialty Site Leads to ensure service continuity is maintained through Department scheduling practices, including but not limited to vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization;
  5. Participate in the monitoring of standards, quality, and utilization of resources of the department in the zone;
  6. Provide Performance management for all department members;
  7. Provide complaint and discipline management for department members;
  8. Supports the research agenda within the department;
  9. Participate in any clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA;
  10. Leads recruitment/retention for the department for the Zone;
  11. Ensures that new hire and onboarding processes are completed with support from the Specialty Site Lead as required;
  12. Participate in Leadership development.

Qualifications

  • MD (with College Certification in Internal Medicine) licensed in Nova Scotia
  • Evidence of past and ongoing leadership training.
