Job Description

Working in a leadership capacity and primarily accountable to the Senior Medical Director, Nova Scotia Cancer Care Programme (NSCCP) and Northern Zone and Eastern Zone Medical Leadership, the Oncology Medical Director is responsible for ensuring the operations of the cancer care program in the zones are evidence-informed and that it provides quality, safe, appropriate and sustainable programs and services. The Medical Director provides clinical leadership to the cancer care program and physicians and operates within the LEADS leadership framework. The Medical Director also works with the Administrative Director NSCC, the NSCCP Co-Leads, and the Zone Medical and Operations Executive Directors to develop and implement organizational and care delivery models that are congruent with the provincial vision and goals for cancer control.

This is a 0.20 - 0.40 FTE position. 

The Oncology Medical Director is responsible for the following deliverables:

  1. Assist relevant department heads in ensuring medical staff are compliant with the Bylaws and Rules and regulations of the NSH.
  2. Holds regular meetings of the members and with the Divisions and Department leaders that encompass those members and provides the Senior Director and Senior Medical Director of the cancer care program with minutes and regular updates.
  3. Collaborates with the Zonal Department/ Division heads and coordinates any issues to establish responsibility.  The oncology specific operational issues shall be generally under their jurisdiction.
  4. Attends relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director and Cancer Care Program Senior Directors.
  5. Provides co-leadership along with the Zone administrative director for strategic and operational planning, evaluation and budgeting as well as any patient concerns or complaints that arise.
  6. Responsible for providing leadership to the medical staff and divisional leaders to enhance the delivery of oncology care globally from prevention and screening to palliative care and survivorship. This includes medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, hematology, GPO's and associate physicians as well as physicians’ learners (s) in the supervised zone(s).
  7. Works with Specialty Site Leads to ensure service continuity is maintained through CCP scheduling practices, including but not limited to vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
  8. Participates in the monitoring and adherence of standards, quality, and utilization of resources of the CCP in the zone and enhance collaboration provincially under the CCP.
  9. Participates in performance management for all CCP members.
  10. Along with relevant Zone Department Head, provides complaint and discipline management for CCP members.
  11. Helps coordinates medical students and residents in the Zone working within cancer care rotations/electives.
  12. Supports the research agenda within the CCP.
  13. Participates in any clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
  14. Leads recruitment/retention for the department for the Zone.
  15. Ensures that new hire and onboarding processes are completed with support from the Specialty Site lead as required.
  16. Organizes, along with Organization Performance, regular IMMR for the CCP.
  17. Participates in leadership development.
