About This Opportunity: This leadership role is fully funded through Veterans Affairs Canada and is accountable to the Central Zone Department Head of Family Practice, NSHA. The Medical Director works in a Co-leadership relationship with the Health Services Director, Veterans Services to provide high quality, resident centred care to the veterans who reside in the Veterans Memorial Building in a manner consistent with the mission of Veterans Affairs Canada which strives to “provide exemplary, client centred services and benefits that respond to the needs of Veterans, other clients and their families in recognition of their service to Canada and keep their memory of their achievements and sacrifices alive for all Canadians”. The Medical Director, in this collaborative role, is involved in the decision making regarding the development, implementation and evaluation of medical care, clinical practice standards, policies and initiatives that lead to the enhancement of resident centred care.

Job Description

  • Ensure the development of standards and policies of resident driven care that reflect the VAC Mission statement in the context of the needs of Veterans and their families
  • Facilitate regular meetings between Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy to optimize collaborative clinical practice opportunities
  • Continue to foster clinical and research relationships with Geriatrics and other disciplines as we work towards a culture of excellence in frail older adult care at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building
  • Continue to work with NSHA leadership in clinical service planning that is aligned with NSHA strategic directions and responsive to the evolving needs of the frail older adult population at VMB
  • Report on professional and clinical matters to the Head, Department of Family Practice
  • Develop and monitor key clinical indicators in the development of an effective quality assurance program
  • Develop and maintain the physician on call system to insure medical coverage 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. Meet regularly with family physicians to review issues pertaining to the delivery of care
  • Co-chair the Veterans Services Interdisciplinary Quality Improvement and Safety Team
  • Initiate and participate in quality and resident/patient safety reviews
  • Develop clinical processes, policies and procedures that reflect evidence based practice , meet Accreditation Canada Standards and efficiently utilize budget resources
  • Provide 2.5 days per week of dedicated time to the Medical Director role
  • Maintain clinical activity and participate in regular on-call rotation
  • Attend meetings as required including Veterans Services Management and the meetings with the Head of DFP.

Qualifications

Medical Doctor with Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Holds or is eligible to hold privileges in the Central Zone Department of Family Practice, NSHA

Certificate in Health Care of the Elderly as asset

Clinical and administrative experience in care of the elderly.
