Nova Scotia Health is the largest provider of health services in Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Health (NSH) Trauma Program leads collaboration with tertiary/quaternary, regional, and community sites to ensure a highly efficient, effective, and integrated trauma care system for all Nova Scotians. To support the provision of optimal trauma care across Nova Scotia, our program is seeking a Quality Lead with expertise in trauma care.

Job Description

Trauma Nova Scotia (TNS) and Nova Scotia Health is seeking a Quality Lead Physician. Reporting to the Senior Medical Director (SMD), Trauma Nova Scotia, and working in close partnership with key stakeholders including the Trauma Nova Scotia Quality Committee and the Director, this role is vital in advancing the quality of care provided to trauma patients across the province.

The Quality Lead’s responsibility will include (but not limited to):

  • Under the direction of the SMD, the Trauma Nova Scotia Quality Lead Physician will chair (in a co-lead role with the Director) the provincial trauma quality committee.
  • Design, champion and lead the development and implementation of a provincial trauma quality improvement framework.
  • In collaboration with TNS SMD and TNS Director, develop quality initiatives on an annual timeline.
  • With TNS staff, develop a framework for monitoring trauma quality initiatives.
  • Standardize assessments of all initiatives and development of a reporting structure for key stakeholders.
  • Utilize data and evidence to identify gaps in care, drive performance improvements, and inform clinical decision-making.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and teams across disciplines to standardize care processes and improve patient outcomes.
  • Foster education and knowledge-sharing to enhance the understanding and application of trauma quality principles.
  • Ensure alignment with national trauma quality benchmarks and accreditation standards.

Other deliverables include:

  1. Plan, organize and moderate quarterly M&M Rounds.
  2. With the Trauma Program Manager, review all deaths of trauma inpatients.
  3. Review all Safety Improvement and Management System (SIMS) with Program Manager.

These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted annually by the Senior Medical Director.

Qualifications

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) (http://cpsns.ns.ca/definedlicense.aspx) or The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CPSNS) (https://cpsns.ns.ca/).
  • Currently hold or are eligible for appropriate privileges at the QEII.
  • All specialists must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Experience and/or certification in Quality Improvement
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Current ATLS certification.
  • Experience and expertise in the management of trauma patients within a large organization.
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills.
  • Mental, visual, and physical demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience as a Trauma Team Leader is an asset.
  • Experience as a resident trauma team leader is an asset.
  • Experience in inpatient trauma management is an asse
  • Graduate degree in quality management, patient safety, or interest and willingness to pursue is an asset.
  • ATLS instructor status is an asset.
  • Specific trauma training, including dedicated trauma fellowship or equivalent, is an asset.

The hours of work for the successful candidate will be negotiated with the SMD upon offer for the position.
