The Department of Critical Care, on behalf of Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Health, invite applications for an opportunity in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are looking for a full-time academic Intensivist to join our dedicated group.

The Department of Critical Care is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and a leader of secondary, tertiary, and quaternary clinical services in Atlantic Canada. Its mission is to deliver high quality health care, medical education, and research.

The Department of Critical care includes 14 Adult and 6 Paediatric Intensivists, as well as 8 community critical care physicians all with various clinical backgrounds and experiences. Our department has a growing research program with a research associate, two full-time research coordinators and two research assistants with various methodological expertise that include local studies as well as enrollment into larger multicenter studies.

Our educational program includes training of medical students, residents, and an accredited Royal College critical care medicine training program. Our group has an established high fidelity simulation training, Point of Care ultrasound and has a quality improvement program. 

Job Description

Due to expansion of the department to include our Medical IMCU, along with a retirement, we currently are looking for an intensivist to work between our ICU and IMCU units. This role would be most suitable for those physicians with a background in internal medicine, but exceptional candidates with other specialty skill sets would be considered to meet academic and expansion criteria of the department. Additional positions may be available by time of interview.

This in an academic position and will include clinical, education, and research deliverables within critical care. Clinical work will be split between the intensive care units within Central Zone, Nova Scotia Health and the Medical IMCU at the Halifax Infirmary.

Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Health Sciences Centre provides care to patients from the province of Nova Scotia and is a quaternary referral centre for Atlantic Canada. The QEII HSC is comprised of a 12-bedded medical/surgical/neurosurgical unit at the Halifax Infirmary (HI) and a 10-bedded medical/surgical ICU at the Victoria General Hospital (VG). The QEII is currently undergoing multimillion dollar redevelopment program which will include the consolidation of HI and VG units into a newly built co-located 48-bedded unit (currently estimated to open in 6 years)

Dartmouth General Hospital is an acute-care regional hospital with a newly renovated 8-bedded medical/surgical ICU. Future expansion of the Dartmouth site is already being planned with expansion of the ICU and opening of an IMCU.

The department has approval to implement a rapid response team at the Halifax infirmary in 2025 and potential involvement in these roles could be incorporated into clinician job plans in the future.

Qualifications

• MD with Specialty recognition and training (FRCPC or equivalent) in Adult Critical Care Medicine.
• Eligible for a medical licence with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
• Have a record of academic achievement.
