Valley Regional Hospital (VRH) is seeking an orthopaedic surgeon to join the team of six to fill a 0.75 full-time equivalency (FTE). The successful candidate will share the on-call rotation, existing OR allocation at VRH and satellite locations (Yarmouth Regional and South Shore Regional Hospitals), fracture clinic and Hip & Knee clinic. Outpatient orthopaedic care in satellite locations within Western Zone is required. The practice is general orthopaedics with the main focus on primary hip and knee arthroplasty with trauma coverage and ideally some foot and ankle or additional other subspecialty expertise. The candidate must hold expertise in amputation and/or is willing to undergo additional training to demonstrate competence in this area of need in the Zone. The first six months would be considered probationary before the position is made permanent.
VRH opened its doors to patients in 1992. The hospital serves the people of Kings and Annapolis Counties and provides specialty services as a referral centre for the Annapolis Valley and other areas of Western Nova Scotia. Located in Kentville, VRH is a 137-inpatient-bed facility that provides inpatient, outpatient, and satellite care to approximately 80,000 residents. The division of Orthopaedics covers the entirety of the Western Zone and therefore a population of over 250,000 people.
Job Description
Responsibilities
- work as a full scope of practice orthopaedic surgeon providing care to the patients within Western Zone
- participate in call shifts
- support Nova Scotia Health in advancing the delivery of orthopedic surgery care by liaising with the applicable staff within the zone and province
- offer consultation support to Western Zone, which includes day-time coverage and occasional overnight/weekend coverage
- be accountable to the patient population in Western Zone by providing clinics and occasional satellite clinics that will require travel
- responsible to the Zone Surgery Department Head (or delegate) and Zone Medical Executive Director (ZMED) for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice
- operate within the Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of Nova Scotia Health
Qualifications
- all applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
- all specialists must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
- membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
