Nova Scotia Health (NSH) is seeking expressions of interest for the role of Site Specialty Lead for the Emergency Department at Hants Community Hospital in the Central Zone

The Central Zone, Hants Site, Emergency Medicine Lead is the site representative of the Hants Emergency Department.

The Emergency Medicine Lead endeavors to ensure that a high standard of patient care is maintained by the medical staff of Emergency, in accordance with the law, the Bylaws, the Rules and Regulations, licensing and accreditation standards and the standards of academic institutions (where applicable).

Job Description

ACCOUNTABILITY

Due to the complexity of the NSHA, the Central Zone, Hants Site, Emergency Medicine Lead has a dual accountability. For day-to-day operations of the Emergency Department at Hants Community Hospital they are accountable to the Central Zone, Hants Site, Medical Lead. For all strategic and operational plans, they are accountable to the Zone Department Head, Emergency Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Central Zone, Hants Site, Emergency Medicine Lead:

    1. 1. Will ensure that the mission, vision and values of the NSHA are embodied in their leadership and will participate in the development and implementation of the NSHA corporate strategic plan and its implementation.
      1. Will develop regular and collaborative relationships with Zone Department Heads, other Medical Site Leads, Deputy/Division/Service Heads, and Health Service Directors and will act as a resource to the appropriate VP of Integrated Health Service.
      1. Will participate in the Hants Clinical Affairs, M & M reviews, Hants ED Ops committees, and/or other facility-based committees as required.
      1. Will develop and foster collaborative relationships with the Emergency Health Service Manager, Health Services Director and Hants Medical Site Lead for the safe and efficient functioning of the Department.
      1. Will ensure proper Emergency Medicine standards of care, as well as active participation in CZESC.
      1. The Central Zone, Hants Site, Emergency Medicine Lead:
        • Receives and acts, through appropriate channels, on all reports from the medical staff or administration with respect to situations which may adversely affect patient care in or at the hospital.
        • Ensures that the Physician ED Staff are kept informed of changes in hospital policy, objectives, and regulation.
        • Will participate in policy development as it pertains to their individual facility.
        • Is responsible to work collaboratively with the Zone Department Heads to ensure the integration of departmental activities within their community/facility.
        • Is responsible to work collaboratively with the Zone Department Heads in planning for the physician human resource needs unique to their community/facility. This will include the development of recruitment, selection, orientation and retention strategies.
        • Is responsible to actively participate in the Zone process for credentialing and privileging of ED physician staff members at their facility.
        • Is responsible for implementing and maintaining appropriate measures to ensure that the quality of services offered by all members of the ED Physician Staff is evaluated on a regular basis and those corrective actions are taken when problems are identified.
        • Is responsible for monitoring practices of members of the Physician ED Staff to ensure compliance with the NSHA Medical Staff Bylaws, the Rules & Regulations and policies established by the Zone MAC and the Board.
        • Will make every effort to ensure that there is appropriate physician coverage for the daily operations of the Hants Community Hospital Emergency Department.
      1. Working through and with Zonal Department Heads, oversees the medical care given to patients presenting to the ED for care.
      1. Will report to the Medical Site Lead at Hants Community Hospital for day-to-day issues regarding clinical/patient problems, communication breakdown and any problems that affect the ED and Hants Community Hospital.
      1. Will report to the Zonal Department Head of ED regarding quality, CZESC, and overall ED zone planning.

Qualifications

  1. The Central Zone, Hants Site, Emergency Medicine Lead must be an active member of a clinical department within the NSHA.
  2. Must be a credentialed physician with privileges at a site within the NSHA.
  3. Will undergo an annual performance review, and will do a performance appraisal on physicians within their department.
  4. Will maintain their clinical activity as well as their commitment to support teaching and research.
