Company Description

The Cape Breton Correctional Facility (CBCF) is a medium security correctional facility in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This facility has a maximum capacity of 96 adult male persons in custody. The facility also has a temporary accommodation of 4-bed for adult women and a 6-bed for youth.

NS Health is responsible for the delivery of health services to Persons in Custody (PIC) at all adult provincial correctional facilities.  NS Health provides/coordinates health care delivery including, but not limited to primary care, mental health and addictions, and access to dental care. Based on healthcare needs, PIC can access off site health services.  NS Health is committed to ensuring the well-being PIC in our care through high-quality medical treatment and compassionate support.

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Family Physician to join our healthcare team. This part-time Family Physician position involves working half a day (4 hours) per week. The successful candidate will provide primary care services to persons in custody, manage chronic and acute medical conditions, and work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to promote the overall health and well-being of this population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary care services, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Conduct medical assessments for new and existing persons in custody.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions.
  • Respond to weekday/weekend on call.
  • Work closely with nursing staff, mental health professionals, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records in accordance with NS Health policies and legal requirements.
  • Documentation of patient contacts shall be made consistent with policies and procedures of Mental Health Services, NSHA.
  • Operate within the policies and procedures of NS Health.
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities associated with CBCF.
  • Agrees to perform the work required in a timely, and clinically responsible manner.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure:
    • Licensed to practice/eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
    • All family medicine physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in family medicine or a related field. Experience in correctional healthcare is an asset but not required.
  • Skills: Strong clinical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Professionalism: High ethical standards and a commitment to providing compassionate, respectful care to all PIC.
