Our commitment to learning and listening

Nova Scotia Health acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People and pays respect to the Indigenous knowledges held by the Mi’kmaq People, and to the wisdom of their Elders past and present. The Mi’kmaq People signed Peace and Friendship Treaties with the Crown, and section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms Aboriginal and Treaty rights. We are all Treaty people.

We recognize that in the past, we have not always gotten it right. We have heard feedback from Indigenous physicians and communities and we are committed to doing better. We are actively listening, learning and taking steps to ensure our approach is more respectful, inclusive and grounded in relationship-building. This includes ongoing engagement, reflection and a willingness to change how we work.

We know this is continuous work and we are committed to moving forward with care and accountability.

Mi’kmaw Indigenous Patient Navigator

Mi’kmaw Indigenous Patient Navigator (MIPN) is a service that Indigenous patients and families can connect with while receiving Nova Scotia Health care and services. The service is here to:

  • Assist Mi’kmaq and Indigenous patients to overcome barriers to timely and culturally safe care.
  • Support Mi’kmaq and Indigenous clients to bridge the gap between Indigenous clients and healthcare professionals.
  • Advocate for cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Be a resource to Nova Scotia Health clinical staff to deliver time-sensitive and culturally safe care.
  • Coordinate between Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq health systems and community partners.
  • Patients, families, staff or physicians can refer to the service directly by phone or email.
