Nova Scotia Health acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People and pays respect to the Indigenous knowledges held by the Mi’kmaq People, and to the wisdom of their Elders past and present. The Mi’kmaq People signed Peace and Friendship Treaties with the Crown, and section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms Aboriginal and Treaty rights. We are all Treaty people.
We recognize that in the past, we have not always gotten it right. We have heard feedback from Indigenous physicians and communities and we are committed to doing better. We are actively listening, learning and taking steps to ensure our approach is more respectful, inclusive and grounded in relationship-building. This includes ongoing engagement, reflection and a willingness to change how we work.
We know this is continuous work and we are committed to moving forward with care and accountability.
Mi’kmaw Indigenous Patient Navigator (MIPN) is a service that Indigenous patients and families can connect with while receiving Nova Scotia Health care and services. The service is here to:
Eskasoni Health Centre offers primary care services, home care services, community health nursing, pharmacy, mental wellness, opioid maintenance and addiction therapy, and other services at the new healthcare complex overlooking the Bras d’Or Lake.
The Primary Care clinic provides culturally appropriate, integrated, accessible health care services from physicians and nurses who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs, developing a sustained partnership with patients, and practicing in the context of family and community wellness.
The majority of our healthcare team members speak our Mi’kmaw language. They offer inclusive, confidential and professional services for all community members.
A truly collaborative partnership between Millbrook First Nation and Nova Scotia Health is set to bring about the construction of an enhanced healthcare facility for the community and surrounding areas.
This project will enhance access to care for Millbrook and surrounding communities, where the population continues to grow. Central to this work is the development of a health home and broader health neighbourhood model, supported by high-performing, interprofessional, collaborative family practice teams, through the establishment of an enhanced collaborative care clinic in Millbrook First Nation. These efforts are grounded in a commitment to culturally safe, community-informed care and are intended to improve health outcomes, advance health equity, and support the ongoing strength and well-being of the Millbrook community and neighbouring populations.
