Practicing Addiction Medicine in Nova Scotia
The Mental Health & Addiction Program (MHAP) exists as one component of a broader mental health and addictions 'system of care' in which a continuum of mental health and addiction services are delivered using a stepped care model. Stepped care is an evidence-based model through which individuals are matched to one of five tiers of interventions, beginning with the least intensive and moving to the most intensive based on individuals needs.
We have a number of full-time and part-time opportunities throughout the province that can be tailored to meet specific practice interest and scope. Physicians practicing under the MHAP are not responsible for overhead expenses.

The new Atlantic Registry allows for greater mobility of fully licensed physicians in Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Isalnd and Newfoundland).
The Registry allows fully licensed physicians to practice anywhere in Atlantic Canada, regardless of which Atlantic province is their home base.
Physician Retirement Incentive
The retirement benefit is available to all full- and part-time doctors who are licensed to work in Nova Scotia and provide direct patient care or clinical services such as specialists in radiology and pathology. The amounts doctors can receive based on their years of service, are as follows:
- Five or fewer years of service – $5,000 annually; no savings contribution by the doctor is required
- Five to 15 years – up to $10,000 annually
- More than 15 years – up to $15,000 annually.
The Province’s contribution is based on full-time equivalency. Doctors who work part-time will have their hours prorated and contribution matched based on their full-time equivalency.
