Company Description

The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for a substantive full-time psychiatrist for Nova Scotia Health’s (NSH) Central Zone Community Mental Health and Addictions (CMHA) Program.

The Department of Psychiatry is a mid-sized clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty work as members of multidisciplinary teams within the Nova Scotia Mental Health and Addiction Program to provide general psychiatric services to patients primarily in the Central Zone and specialty services to patients across the province.

Job Description

This position is 1.0 FTE based in Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) at Windsor/Hants (0.5) and Dartmouth (0.5) CMHTs, with the flexibility to work at other CMHTs and community services, e.g. Recovery and Integration services, if your service is required at these services.

Start date - January 01, 2025.

Desirable Skills: General Adult Psychiatry and experience with Community Mental Health Teams.

Roles and Responsibilities: To be the Attending or Consultant physician for ambulatory patients in the CMHA Program.

Conduct, order and ensure appropriate psychiatric assessments, appropriate psychosocial and laboratory investigations, and pharmacological & psychosocial interventions as per current standard practice.

Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule as required within the clinical program unless specifically exempted.

Share in the short-term coverage of other services as needed during holidays or illness of other department members.

Experience working within an interdisciplinary team to provide care and treatment for persons with moderate to severe psychiatric disorders.

FTE details: 90% (0.9 FTE) for clinical and 10% (0.1 FTE) for research, teaching and CPD

Clinical duties:
• As directed by the head of the section of community psychiatry at Dalhousie University
• Clinical direct and indirect care as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Clinical "desk-side" teaching and didactic education
• Clinical administration
• Include on-call service
• Involve supervision of junior staff including residents and clinical clerks
• Support research as needed (and conduct it if personally desired)

Educational Duties: Didactic teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education level as determined in discussion with the director of education, Department of Psychiatry.

Research: Research and other scholarly innovation are encouraged; candidates who have a sufficient track record in mental health research may be eligible for protected research time depending on agreement with the Department of Psychiatry’s research and executive leadership.

Qualifications

Fellowship in Psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent e.g. MRCPsych with Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry or American Board of Psychiatry Certified by Examination as determined by the Department of Psychiatry; eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
